Running Multiple Backup Programs

We do not support running our software in conjunction with any other backup software. The only time we recommend using other backup software is to perform backups of SQL or Exchange to disk and then using KineticD to backup the resulting file.

Our software uses the Archive attribute to keep track of which files it had or had not backed up. The Archive attribute basically tells the software “This file has changed recently and has not been backed up since that time”. KineticD will reset the Archive attribute after it has backed up the file. This is KineticD's only mechanism to decide which file to check to see if it needs backing up. So it is imperative that every file that you want to be backed up, by KineticD, needs to have its Archive attribute set for that backup. When you first install KineticD, we automatically reset the archive attribute on all selected folders. Also when changes are made to selected folders, we automatically set the archive on all selected folders.

Problem arises when you have KineticD and another backup program backing up the same files. When the other program backup the files, it resets the archive flag and KineticD will not be able to detact the changed file.

That is why you cannot have two programs backing up the same files. You may use backup.exe to backup a SQL Server or Exchange Server to disk and have DDB backup the resulting data. For more details, please refer to the how to backup a server section of this guide.
