Installing and Configuring the Software

To back up your data with KineticD, you need to install and configure a small piece of software that will connect your computer for our servers through the internet. In order for your backups to be completed correctly, it's important to understand the process of the software configurations. Please take a look at the most common topics. Hardware Requirements

The Backup Client is designed for any PC's with Windows XP and up, including servers. you will need an active internet connection for the duration of the backups, and may need to configure your firewall.

Installing the Software

In order to install the software, you need to have an active account with KineticD. To reach the installation link, simply log into the web portal with your username and password, and go to the Download tab. Follow the cues of the installation wizard to get the software onto your computer and begin your backups.

Understanding the Default Options

The option of the backup client can be found by clicking on the Options icon in the main dialogue box of the software. You will need to change the options to best suit your backup needs.

How do I know what to back up?

What you back up is entirely up to you! The backup client will be able to backup any files that your user account has full access to. Simply make the appropriate choices in the Folder Selections window of the backup client, and your files will be uploaded onto our servers.

Selecting Folder for Backup

The Folder Selections are located in the Folders tab of the Options windows for the Backup Client. The folders represent the structure of your computer, and you can browse through the folders that you have selected for backup, as well as change those settings.

Backup Encrypted Files

You need to setup a Data Recovery Agent to backup encrypted folders/files.

Running the Software as an Application

By default, the Backup Client is installed as a Windows Service running under the SYSTEM Account's credentials. This works best for backing up server. In the case of backing up workstations, it may be preferable to run the client as an Application operating under the current user's credentials.

Backing up a Server

The Backup Client is designed to be able to back up small to medium sized servers. The pages on installing and configuring the client to run on a server will provide you with information and detailed steps that you will need to take.

Backing up a Mapped Drive

If you need to back up a Network File Server and cannot install the Backup Software on the server, you can instead run the Backup Client on a workstation with a mapped network drive pointing to the server.

Backup Solutions for Other Software

To backup your files, you simply need to select the directories containing them in the backup client's folder selections window. Although the backup software can automatically find common folders like Outlook and Favourites, it's important that to make sure your data folders are selected for backup.

Completing the Initial Backup

During the initial backup, all the data you have selected for backup will be fully uploaded onto our system. Depending on the amount of data and your internet connection, the upload might take a while and be heavy on the system. After the initial backup is complete, the software will run in the background and should not slow down your computer.

Back Up Multiple Computers

You can back up multiple PCs or laptops with KineticD. The only additional cost will be the additional storage used.

Running KineticD With Other Backup Programs

We do not support running our software in conjunction with any other backup software. The only time we recommend using other backup software is to perform backups of SQL or Exchange to disk and then using KineticD to backup the resulting file.
